But what does that all mean?
OECM is a term created to acknowledge that an area does not need to be considered “protected” in order to be conserved. It is a way to count and promote alternative methods of land stewardship and management.
FAQs
What is the difference between an OECM and a Protected Area?
OECMs are similar to protected areas in that they are managed in a way that achieves positive outcomes for biodiversity. They differ in that the primary objective of a protected area is to conserve biodiversity, where as an OECM will still achieve biodiversity and conservation goals but may have a different primary objective.
How do OECMs benefit the Community?
OECMs are beneficial in that they support a holistic approach to conservation. They allow for a clearer linkage between biodiversity outcomes and community economic prosperity. OECMs can lead to increased local funding opportunities, increased tourism, and improved community aesthetics; simply by allowing existing nature to endure and flourish.
How does an OECM make my life better as an individual?
OECMs are a non-restrictive approach to sustaining local biodiversity hotspots. This means OECMs are meant to allow recreational and other land uses. For example an OECM may be used for hunting, biking, snowmobiling, camping, skiing, hiking, etc. while simultaneously creating positive impacts for important habitats and wildlife.
Are there any existing OECMs in Manitoba?
Yes! Canadian Forces Base Shilo has an OECM. The land that is used for military training serves a double purpose by also creating long term positive outcomes for nature.

Why do OECMs Matter?
By including OECMs in local, national, and international conserved area statics, we are able to ensure that critical land use and policy decisions are made with an accurate understanding of the conservation landscape.
Do OECMs come with any incentives (financial or other)?
Yes and No. While OECMs do not provide outright payments like a conservation easement, OECM recognition can help open doors to all kinds of exciting funding.
